I sat down with Tori Hance of Fleuressence Floral Design to ask some common questions about the wedding floral industry. Her responses were both enlightening and informative, and I hope will offer some insight into the decisions you make for your special day. Q: How long have you been in the industry and what inspired you to become a wedding floral designer?
A: I have worked in the wedding/event industry for 6 years – floral for 4 years. I kind of fell into it; I was studying Horticulture and was mostly focused on learning landscape design, but I took a floral design class as an elective. It just felt so natural to me and I just kind of went with it!
Q: How many weddings do you do annually?
A: 40-60 depending on the year.
Q: One of the things I’ve found is that a lot of wedding clients don’t truly understand everything that wedding vendors do to execute the perfect day. What are some of the tasks you do regularly that potential clients might not be aware of?
A: Woof that’s a big one! A few are… (1) managing, ordering, and cleaning our inventory of hard goods like vases and candles regularly, (2) creating unique recipes from living, seasonal products and ordering the perfect quality products from our suppliers takes HOURS, and (3) preparing for, cleaning, and maintaining flowers before we even get to designing. For example, we remove thorns and unwanted foliage from hundreds or even thousands of stems for each wedding.
Q: What is the biggest misconception wedding couples have about floral designers?
A: We get this a lot: “Flowers cost so much..so you guys must be raking it in, right?” Ha! No! I assure you that is definitely not the case. We make a very modest profit/income and are certainly not driving Teslas.
Q: What is your favorite part of the wedding day?
A: Handing the bride her bouquet!
Q: How would you describe your wedding style?
A: Whimsical and organic.
Q: What was your favorite floral wedding trend for 2021, and what do you think will be popular in 2022?
A: Floral installations! Hopefully we’ll see more of these in 2022 because they’re our absolute favorite!
Q: What kind of packages do you offer?
A: We offer full custom floral design services and a la carte options (delivery or pickup).
Q: How far in advance do you recommend couples book your services?
A: The earlier you can book our services the better, but we advise couples not to wait much longer than 1 year before their wedding date.
Q: What advice would you give to couples when choosing their florals?
A: Don’t be afraid of color! Embrace your uniqueness through color! Just keep pinning those fun color palettes that speak to you!
Q: Any wedding pet peeves?
A. Even though I’m always prepared to offer pinning services for my wedding couples, I really don’t like pinning boutonnieres.
Q: What sets you apart from other floral designers?
A: Diversity! I really prefer not to define my brand in any specific sort of category because I truly love them all. Moody, organic, fine art, boho…it all works for us. I like to interpret the specific style of my clients and give it a little extra something special and unique.
